R-Thermostud
R-Thermostud is a strip placed under stud walling to insulate between the slab and the internal stud walls. In a standard ground bearing slab, stud walls sit directly onto the concrete, which connects directly to the cold ground creating cold bridges into the home. Cold bridging (also known as Thermal bridging) is in essence, breaks in the insulation layer where other materials exist which conduct more easily allowing heat or cold transfer in and/or out of the building.

There are a number of reasons why thermal bridges should be avoided, firstly heat loss - it has been estimated that around 30% of the total loss of heat from a building can be attributed to thermal bridging, increasing the energy consumption and therefore cost of running the building. Furthermore thermal bridges create mould growth and unhealthy living environment's and therefore should be avoided as much as possible.

R-Thermostud has been created to overcome the cold bridging issue which often exists between ground bearing slabs and internal stud walls. The picture below demonstrates the thermal bridge that exists in standard ground bearing slabs and stud walls. The timber literally "bridges" the gap and allows heat or cold to transfer through it. This is now an area of heat loss and cold entry reducing the homes energy efficiency. The insulation above the slab cannot be continued under the stud wall due to its lack of compressive strength. R-Thermostud has the strength and insulating ability to prevent cold bridging. The R-Thermostud can be doubled in thickness to further improve the energy efficiency. The images below demonstrates the thermal bridge (circled) that exists on a standard slab.
And the picture below shows how the R-Thermostud functions to prevent the thermal bridge.
Dimensions: 2500mm long x 60mm wide x 50mm high (Width and length can be adjusted to customers specifications)

Price £4.50 + VAT per 2500mm length

Installation: To be installed by placing the R-Thermostud directly under the sole plate. Fix through the Sole plate and R-Thermostud into the concrete slab as standard using predrilled holes and concrete fixings, but ensure the concrete fixings are at least 50mm longer to account for the thickness of the R-Thermostud. R-Thermostud should not be installed under structural studwork, unless approved by a Structural engineer.
